Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai to Give Keynote Address at 2008 Travelers’ Philanthropy Conference
Dr. Wangari Maathai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and the founder of Kenya’s Green Belt Movement, has graciously agreed to give the keynote address at the 2008 Travelers’ Philanthropy Conference to be held in Arusha, Tanzania, December 3-5, 2008. The conference, organized by the Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD), will focus on the growing global movement spearheaded by responsible tourism businesses to provide financial and other types of support to local community and conservation projects.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS:
CALL FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS
Are you interested in speaking on a workshop panel at the 2008 Travelers’ Philanthropy Conference? Here’s the easy process to apply:
The conference’s content will be structured around the following five thematic issues:
1. Social Service Initiatives: Health & Education
- How Travelers’ Philanthropy projects can best make effective, lasting, and strategic investments in social initiatives such as public health, HIV-AIDS prevention and treatment, and education.
2. Conservation
- Linking tourism businesses and Travelers’ Philanthropysm to the conservation of wildlife, biodiversity, and marine resources at the local level through financial support and economic incentives.
3. Social Justice & Empowerment
- Designing and implementing projects that target the root social and institutional causes of poverty in Africa and other parts in the world, through social movements for justice, equity, and political voice;
- Using Travelers’ Philanthropy to provide specific training and capacity building for communities, emphasizing local participation and empowerment.
4. Climate Change & Tourism
- Addressing climate change and carbon footprint issues facing the travel industry through innovative off-setting and other Travelers’ Philanthropy strategies.
5. Business & Enterprise
- Developing and spreading tourism business models that fully incorporate ethical and sustainable tourism with Travelers’ Philanthropysm as a central element.
Individuals or organizations interested in presenting on one of these topics are invited to:
- Submit an abstract of 500-1000 words outlining the subject and content of your presentation.
- List the thematic issue area the presentation will fall under
- Send contact information including a brief descriptive sentence about your work. For organizations or companies, send a brief description, plus contact information and websites.
- Please indicate if your participation depends on receiving a full or partial scholarship to attend the conference.
- Abstracts and other materials should be sent by email to Whitney Cooper [wcooper@ecotourismcesd.org] at CESD’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
A sub-group from the Conference Advisory Committee will make the final selections.
The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2008; those authors selected to present at the conference will be notified no later than August 15, 2008.
